The microcapsules produced by this process range in length from 1 to 2000 micrometers (microns). There are two main methods used for the microencapsulation process: spray drying and coacervation. As a result of coacervation, the microcapsule cores form a viscous microcapsule wall that is hardened using cross-linking agents.

The main advantage of microencapsulation when it comes to CBD consumption is that it allows for the slow and targeted release of active cannabis compounds. When drugs or natural compounds are taken orally, they must pass through the digestive tract before entering the bloodstream and taking effect. Due to this effect of the body’s digestive system, including stomach acid and various metabolic processes, many ingredients are broken down before they enter the bloodstream. Microcapsules do not start to dissolve immediately after entering the stomach. Pancreatic enzymes initiate the targeted release of active compounds internally.
